Almanexa vs Onyx
Onyx searches what your organization has already written, across connected tools, and is MIT-licensed and self-hostable. Almanexa records something that usually was not written down at all: the decision, the outcome someone expected, and what actually happened. If your problem is finding an existing document, Onyx is the better tool. If your problem is that the reasoning was never captured, search cannot retrieve it.

When to choose Onyx instead
Choose Onyx when the knowledge already exists in your tools and the problem is finding it. It has a large connector library, permission-aware retrieval, an MIT licence and a genuine self-hosted path. If you want one open-source search-and-chat layer over Slack, Drive, Confluence and the rest, that is exactly what it is built for, and Almanexa does not replace it.
When Almanexa is the better fit
Choose Almanexa when the thing you need was never written down. A decision made in a meeting, the outcome someone expected, and whether it actually worked are not documents waiting to be indexed. Almanexa captures them as they happen, grades them against the result, and requires a person to approve a lesson before anyone relies on it, with the approver never being the author. Many teams run both.
Common questions
- Can Almanexa replace Onyx?
- No, and it is not meant to. Onyx searches the documents you already have; Almanexa records decisions and outcomes that were never documents. They answer different questions, and running both is a reasonable setup.
- Both are self-hostable and open. What actually differs?
- The input. Onyx indexes content that already exists. Almanexa asks for a decision and an expected outcome up front, grades it once the result is known, and gates reuse behind human approval. The licences are similar in spirit; the jobs are not.
